Yogasleep Dohm Classic Fan-Based Sound Machine (White)

A small plug-in machine with a real fan inside that makes a steady rushing-air sound. This entry reads the controls, size and power details, and describes plainly what a steady sound can and cannot cover.

The short version

  • An electric fan in a vented plastic housing: no speaker, no recordings, no loop. Two speeds on a switch; turning the cap and collar changes the volume and tone.
  • $49.99 on Sep 30, 2026 for the white model, sold by Yogasleep and shipped by Amazon.
  • Mains-powered only (120V, 7-foot cord, for the US and Canada). No timer, no app, no battery.
Morning

Switched off at wake-up.

Midday

Not used at this time of day in this routine (some people run one at a desk).

Evening

Not used at this time of day.

Night

Switched on at lights-out and left running until morning.

What the spec shows

We read the Amazon listing for ASIN B00HD0ELFK (bullets and detail table) and Yogasleep's Dohm Classic page, including its spec list and FAQ, on Sep 30, 2026. The two give slightly different size and weight figures; both are shown.

SpecValueWhat to know
Sound sourceInternal fanThe maker says a real fan motor makes the sound continuously, so there is no audio file and no loop point. The listing adds that you do not feel moving air from it.

Volume and toneCap + collarPer the maker's FAQ, rotating the outer cap changes the volume and rotating the collar shifts the tone from a lower hum to a brighter rush.

How it holds up in use

The Dohm is about as simple as a household appliance gets. Plug it in, flip the switch to low or high, then twist the cap and the collar until the sound is where you want it. Because the sound comes from moving air rather than a recording, it has no repeating pattern to notice. The maker has sold essentially the same mechanical design since 1962, and there is nothing to update, charge or pair.

What does a steady sound do? In plain terms, a constant broadband sound makes short, sharper noises less noticeable against it: a car door outside, a creak in the hallway, a neighbor's television through a wall. It does not remove noise, and a loud or low-pitched sound (heavy traffic, a thumping bass) will still come through. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute's general advice is to keep the room quiet, cool and dark [3], and the American Academy of Sleep Medicine suggests a quiet, comfortable room as part of good sleep habits [4]. Fixing the source of noise where you can (closing a window, a door draft strip, earplugs) comes first; a steady fan sound is one more layer. The listing markets the Dohm around sleep and a range of situations in strong terms; we do not repeat those claims.

Two practical points. First, there is no timer: it runs until you switch it off or unplug it, which suits a sound meant to last the night but not someone who wants it to fade out. Second, because it plugs into the wall, place it where the 7-foot cord reaches without stretching across a walkway, and keep it a few feet from your head rather than right beside the pillow; the maker's own loudness figure is measured at six feet.

Before you buy

This model is 120V only and not for use outside the US and Canada. It has no timer, no battery and no alternative sounds: just the fan. If you share the room, agree on the setting; not everyone likes a constant sound.

How to fit it into your day

A sequence for setting it up and using it; it describes the machine, not an outcome.

  1. Choose a spot

Put it on a nightstand or dresser a few feet from the bed, where the cord reaches an outlet without crossing a walkway.

  2. Set the sound once

Try low and high, then rotate the cap for volume and the collar for tone. Pick the quietest setting that makes background noises less noticeable, and leave it there.

  3. Switch on at lights-out around 22:30

Turn it on as part of the same short routine each night, after the book and before the mask.

  4. Switch off at wake-up

Turn it off when you get up. Wipe the housing with a damp cloth now and then to keep dust off the vents.

Price and where it is sold

On Sep 30, 2026 the white Dohm Classic (ASIN B00HD0ELFK, model M1DSUSWH) was $49.99 and in stock, sold by Yogasleep and shipped by Amazon, with a free 30-day refund or replacement shown. The listing also offers other colors as variations. The listing we checked: Yogasleep Dohm Classic, white, on Amazon. Prices change; check the listing on the day you buy.

Who should look elsewhere

  • Anyone who travels or lives outside the US and Canada: this model is 120V only. A small battery or USB sound machine is the portable option.
  • Anyone who wants a timer or a choice of sounds: the Dohm has neither; an electronic sound machine offers both.
  • Anyone whose sleep is a persistent problem, or who notices ringing or other sounds in the ears, should talk to a clinician rather than rely on a sound machine.
