Manta Original Sleep Mask with Adjustable, Detachable Eye Cups (Gray)

An eye mask built from a wide strap and two separate foam cups that you position yourself. This entry reads the materials, fit and washing instructions, and keeps to the one thing a mask does: it blocks light.

The short version

  • A 73 cm head strap with two domed eye cups that attach with hook-and-loop and can be moved anywhere along it, so the cups sit around the eyes rather than on them.
  • $39.00 on Sep 30, 2026 for the gray Original, sold by MantaSleep and shipped by Amazon.
  • It is bulkier than a flat mask. Its job is to keep light off your eyes; that is the whole claim we make for it.

Midday

Not used at this time of day (unless you nap).

How it holds up in use

Most flat masks press a layer of fabric across the eyes and leave gaps at the nose. The Manta takes a different approach: two thick, domed cups rest on the face around each eye, so there is space in front of the eyelid and the edge of the cup meets the face all the way round. Because you place the cups yourself, the fit can be adjusted for a wide or narrow face. The listing's own fitting tips are sensible: adjust the strap so it is snug but not tight, then move the mask up or down to close the gap at the bridge of the nose; side sleepers can angle the strap slightly downward.

Why block light at all? Public sleep guidance keeps it simple: the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute suggests keeping the room quiet, cool and dark [3], and research reviews describe light as the main time cue for the body clock [4]. Curtains, a switched-off screen and a covered standby light do most of that. A mask is a backup for what you cannot control: a streetlight through a gap, a partner's reading lamp, early summer sunrise, or a hotel room. The listing uses strong sleep-outcome language for this mask; we do not repeat it. What we can say is that a mask that seals well puts the eyes in the dark.

The trade-offs are physical. The cups make the mask deeper than a flat one, which some people notice when lying face-down into a pillow, and a wide strap is warmer than a thin elastic band. Detachable cups also mean more parts to keep together in a drawer or suitcase. Washing in a mesh bag matters, according to the maker, because the foam can stretch out of shape otherwise.

Before you buy

Fit is personal. Expect to spend a night or two moving the cups before they seal well. If you have had recent eye surgery or have an eye condition, ask your eye doctor before wearing any mask.

How to fit it into your day

A sequence for setting up and keeping the mask in use; it describes wearing it, not an outcome.

  1. Fit it once, in daylight

Put the mask on, slide each cup until it circles the eye evenly, and adjust the strap until it feels snug but not tight. Check the nose area for gaps.

  2. Keep it within reach

Leave it on the nightstand, cups facing up so they keep their shape, next to your reading light or book.

  3. Put it on at lights-out around 22:30

After the last page and the reading light go off, put the mask on. If it has shifted in the drawer, give the cups a quick nudge.

  4. Wash it now and then

Follow the maker's care line: cold water, in a mesh bag, laid flat to dry, no bleach (or hand wash, as the Amazon table suggests).

Price and where it is sold

On Sep 30, 2026 the gray Manta Original (ASIN B07PRG2CQY) was $39.00 and in stock, sold by MantaSleep and shipped by Amazon, with a free 30-day refund or replacement shown. The maker listed the same mask at $39 on its own site that day. The listing we checked: Manta Original sleep mask, gray, on Amazon. Prices change; check the listing on the day you buy.

Who should look elsewhere

  • Anyone who sleeps mostly face-down or dislikes bulk: a thin, flat mask is lighter and cheaper, though it rests on the eyes.
  • Anyone who can simply darken the room with blackout curtains or blinds may not need a mask at all.
  • Anyone whose sleep is a persistent problem, or who is very sleepy during the day despite enough time in bed, should talk to a clinician rather than buy another accessory.
