What the spec shows
Specs below come from the Amazon listing for ASIN B0BZYCJK89 and from Owala's FreeSip product page and FAQ, all read on Sep 30, 2026. Where the two disagree, we say so.
| Spec | Value | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Capacity | 24 fl oz | About 710 ml. Owala's FAQ also lists 32 oz and 40 oz FreeSip sizes, which are wider. |
| Height | 10.68 in | Both sources agree on the height. |
| Width | 3.12–3.24 in | Owala gives a 3.12 in diameter; the Amazon details say 3.24 in wide. |
| Weight (empty) | 0.4 kg | About 14 oz, per the listing's product details. |
| Lid | FreeSip spout, push-button | Sip upright through the built-in straw or tilt to drink from the wider spout opening. |
| Lock | Carry loop | The loop flips over the button to lock the lid shut. |
| Insulation claim | Cold up to 24 h | A maker claim, not something we tested. Owala describes triple-layer vacuum insulation; the Amazon bullet says double-wall. |
| Materials | Stainless steel; BPA-, lead- and phthalate-free | As stated by Owala. No other safety marks are claimed on the pages we read. |
| Care | Lid top-rack dishwasher; cup by hand | Owala recommends hand-washing the cup to protect the finish. |
How it holds up in use
The lid is the reason people pick this bottle. Press the button and a cover flips up to reveal one opening that does two jobs: hold the bottle upright and you drink through a short built-in straw; tilt it back and you drink from the wider spout part of the same opening. Push the cover down and it clicks shut; swing the carry loop over the button and it is locked for a bag. The wide mouth under the lid takes ice cubes and a bottle brush.
Cleaning takes a little attention. Owala says the lids are top-rack dishwasher safe, the straw can go in the silverware basket, and the steel cup should be washed by hand. Its care guidance also says to remove the spout gasket (there is a pull tab) and clean it separately, to use a sponge or straw brush for the small spaces, to skip bleach and abrasives, and not to microwave, freeze or boil the bottle. It is not meant for hot, carbonated or perishable drinks.
Fit is the other practical question. The Denim listing contradicts itself here: one bullet calls the base "cup holder-friendly," while the next warns that the bottle is wider than standard cup holders and may only fit oversized or specialty ones. If you drive a lot, measure your cup holder first.
As for the habit, public guidance is less about a number of bottles than about drinking regularly. The National Academies set adequate intakes for total water (from all drinks and food combined) rather than a fixed amount of plain water [1], and MedlinePlus notes that needs vary with sex, weight, age, activity level and medical conditions, that food and other drinks count toward the total, and that drinking fluids when you feel thirsty and having beverages with meals should generally keep you hydrated [2]. A bottle on the desk is simply a convenient way to have water within reach; it does not change how much your body needs.
Buy it for cold water and similar drinks only; Owala rules out hot, fizzy and perishable liquids. Plan to take the lid apart and hand-wash the cup regularly. If you are unsure how much fluid you need because of a health condition or medication, ask a clinician rather than aiming for a target on the bottle.
How to fit it into your day
A simple sequence that ties refills to things you already do. It is a routine for using the bottle, not a hydration prescription.
Fill it with breakfast around 08:00
Fill with cold water (ice optional), lock the lid with the loop, and put it in your bag or on the desk where you can see it.
Drink when you are thirsty
Use the straw for small sips while working and the spout when you want a longer drink. There is no need to force it.
Refill at lunch around 12:30
Tie a refill to lunch and, if you take them, to a mid-afternoon break. Our habit note on drinking water through the day goes into the guidance.
Take it apart at the end of the day around 18:00
Empty it, pull the spout gasket, put the lid parts in the top rack if you run the dishwasher, wash the cup by hand, and leave everything open to dry.
Price and where it is sold
On Sep 30, 2026, the Amazon listing for the Owala FreeSip 24 oz in Denim showed $29.99, in stock, shipped and sold by Amazon.com, with a free 30-day refund or replacement window. The listing is here: amazon.com/dp/B0BZYCJK89. We first looked at the Teal/Navy ("Nautical Twilight") color, but that day it was offered only by a third-party seller at $46.00 with 19 left, so we switched this entry to a color Amazon itself was selling. Colors are separate listings and prices vary between them.
Who should look elsewhere
- Anyone who wants hot coffee or tea on the go: this bottle is for cold drinks only, per Owala.
- Drivers with standard cup holders: the Denim listing says it may only fit oversized ones. A slimmer bottle may suit better; the larger FreeSip sizes are wider still.
- Anyone who wants a fully dishwasher-safe bottle: the cup is meant to be washed by hand.
- Anyone told to follow a specific fluid limit or target for a medical reason should follow their clinician's advice rather than a bottle routine.
